Race Updates
September 12, 2007
Hello Race Participants:
RE: Note Your Race Bib Number/Final Notice
For Peggy and I there are few places as special as Run for the Toad, where 906 participants this year will start the run/walk at the Tent City beach and disappear a few kilometers later into the varied forests of the Pinehurst Conservation Area.
On your arrival to Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area race participants and volunteers (identification badge holders) are exempt of all park admission fees. Admission fees will be charged to all others. Fees as follows:
Over 14 years of age -- $4.00
Child (ages 6 to 14) -- $2.50
Children 5 years and under Free
Parking Marshals will then meet you when entering the park interior, directing you to assigned parking areas. No drivers may simply pull over to the roadsides and park. We encourage you to arrive early (carpool if you can) to help facilitate in freeing up our parking marshals for other duties.
For starter's, this year we are employing our improved Race Kit Pickup. Registration opens at 6:15 a.m. and closes at 8:45 a.m. This new system keeps you away from long lines that cut into your pre-race warm-up. Provides distinctive direction procedure for all the athletes and all that is required is for you to know your Race Bib Number. You can obtain your bib number on our website www.runforthetoad.com under side toolbar "Registered Participants." On race day when you get to the Great Forest Bistro Tent please join in the appropriate line that corresponds to your Bib Number. Then you will be directed to pick up your Saucony/Run for the Toad Duffel Bag (registration gift), Hammer Gel, Clif Bars, Advil, Pita Bread, Omega Whey, Platinum Naturals and Epson Salts and don't forget to PICK UP YOUR CHIP!
Remember your Bib Number is also your Meal Ticket too! If you ordered extra meal tickets they have been placed in your Bib Number envelope.
Pre-race massage is available at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy Tent located in the heart of Tent City between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
If Gourmet Coffee is your morning desire, join us at the Tim Horton's tent along with Krispy Kreme donuts for morning refreshments. Note: Young children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while receiving coffee or donuts. Fresh fruit of the day will be available to race participants and volunteers only. All spectators may join us for complimentary coffee and donuts.
Pre-Race Hydrations Stations will be available throughout Tent City consisting of Savarin Springs water and Gatorade. These stations are for race participants and volunteers only.
Pet Rule requesting your cooperation, due to regulations within the Conservation Authority all dogs must be on a short leash at all times. Dog owners must maintain contact with their dog at all times. Dogs are permitted to be in the Tent City courtyard, but restricted from entering any of the Tent structures, or to accompany race participants on the course.
Headsets – It is not a race rule but we are suggesting to people NOT to wear headsets because some of the areas on the trails are single track and you need to be able hear when someone is going to pass you on the trails – Please out of courtesy for others. Consider the options.
NO Smoking Regulation: Due to numerous Tent and display structures our fire regulations maintain the No Smoking rule in Tent City, the start/finish line area and all aid stations. Individuals wishing to smoke may do so in the parking area.
Children: Parents or guardians must maintain contact with young children at all times. Parents or guardians will not be permitted to leave children in the custody of the race volunteers. We request you know where your children are at all times. If in the event that children do stray from a parent or guardian the children can get assistance by identifying themselves to our volunteers wearing the familiar volunteer badge identification.
Kids – Don't Forget: To visit the Thunder Tree Theatre Tent, with Toad Patrol movies and for the first time, there will be an added craft educational hour in which the kids will be able to build a special "You Can Do It" card for their Mom or Dad.
Opening Ceremonies/Race Start Times
The opening ceremonies commence at 9:00 a.m. sharp. During this time, the pre-race massage will be closed and the registration area will be closed.
The race commences at 9:30 a.m. sharp with the 25k and 50k runners.
25k Walkers will start 5 minutes after the last 25k/50k runner crosses the starting mats. Start Time approximately 9:40 a.m.
Drop Bag Area (Next to Aid Station #1)
This year we will provide a 10 x 20 Tented Area for participants drop bags and your other personal needs required during the race. Please note: this area is Not Supervised.
Display your Medal with Pride – This is your personal accomplishment and it's our best ever finishing medal. Remember to receive your finishing medal you must finish the event you are registered for.
Post Race Party – The final preparations are now complete for all our menu planning; we are no longer taking orders for the dinner.
The entertainment by popular demand returns Zorba's classical guitars and the strong vocals of Britanie Cameron.
Door Prizes – not to be missed, a selection of our best designer gifts from months of planning.
Important Note: After Wednesday September 19, 2007 we will not be replying to e-mails or phone calls. Construction of Tent City along with the racecourse preparation commences Friday September 21.
Event Changes:
Please Note: We will not be making any more event changes or race participation changes -- this also includes race day – Please do not ask – thank you.
Imagine 906 race participants will toe the starting line on Saturday September 29th – that's a lot of trail runners/walkers participating under a single banner. Congratulations to all of you that will be joining us this year and we especially thank you for having the confidence in us to pull this one off. The race sold out on May 28, 2007.
At the Toad, we're excited about the improvements we are putting in place for our race participants, volunteers and spectators. We hope you'll share our enthusiasm and passion for this entirely new experience we are creating "just for you".
Kindest personal regards,
George & Peggy

Dear Race Participant:
As many of you are aware the Pinehurst Park Conservation Area plays an important role in the community that extends far beyond Run for the Toad. However those individuals who have attended the Toad know only too well that the Pinehurst Park Conservation Area and Staff play key roles in the success of Run for the Toad. Recently, some of the athletes have asked how they might contribute to the ongoing partnership in maintaining many of the daily requirements necessary in shaping the future of the Pinehurst Conservation.
For the Grand River Conservation Foundation information please click here and if you would like to make a donation to Pinehurst Park please click on the area that says "Donate Now through CanadaHelps.org."
Thank you and Kind regards,

Footwear/Trail Conditions
Many runners new to trail running have inquired as to the necessity of trail shoes on a course like the Toad. Although the Toad course winding, lots of rollers, is far from being technical. If it rains you’ll be measuring your performance through crud and mud of some trail sections. If you consider trying trail shoes buy them early because each stride in a new shoe is an unknown.
Check in with our Sponsor Running Stores and with their guide in hand, your next trail-running purchase need not be an upstream swim.
If you are looking for an aggressive, off-road shoe, the Saucony Grid Omni 5 TR maybe your answer. Built for the most demanding conditions, the Omni 5 TR is water-resistant and provides maximum traction and stability to keep the runner in control under all circumstances. A second density is added to the midsole to provide stability. Equipped with Saucony’s Grid technology, you will receive superior cushioning and stability on heel strike. HRC (High Rebound Compound) and SRC (Super Rebound Compound) are cushioning technologies featured in the heel and forefoot to absorb impact. It’s full XT-900 carbon rubber outsole, complete with aggressive triangular lugs, provides the highest abrasion and traction properties to keep you moving on any terrain.
The listed Running Store Sponsors will be available for any inquiry you may have.

Medical Operations Planning
The Toad has experienced significant and ongoing growth in the world of trail racing. Clearly, though, growth and planning go hand-in-hand. The first component of the plan is our goal to provide competitor safety throughout the course. To do that we stay connected with our volunteers, race participants and sponsors.
As an example, Surinder Budwal heads a company Pro Therapy International. This is the company that develops the Run for the Toad medical protocols that will be followed by the Toad volunteer staff. Surinder contacts all the local and city EMS Personal well in advance of race day and provides the communications program throughout the start, course and finish line.
Grand River Sports Medicine Centre is a multidisciplinary full-service with sports medicine facilities in Kitchener and Cambridge. On race day you’ll see the Grand River Sports Medicine Team (GRSM) at the medical staff tent facilities near the start line. The facility consisting of specialists and a medical doctor caring for participants that might need issues dealt with prior and during the event. This team will have the appropriate supplies and communications to assist throughout the course trail. Medical tent protocol will be under the direction of Doctor Trevor Hall MD, CCFP, DIP Sport Medicine.
If you are currently considering assessment or treatment as a high performance or recreational athlete we encourage you to contact the professionals at Grand River Sports Medicine Centre. From a personal experience the owners and staff of Grand River Sports Medicine really care, and it shows in their expertise experience and enthusiasm for you and Run for the Toad. You might mention you are training for the Toad.
